Residential Applications

In most residential applications, the evaporators and condensers are usually split up in what is called a split system.  The evaporator is normally located inside the air-conditioned space (inside the house), while the condenser sits outside either on the ground, or on the roof.  Residential equipment size is usually between 12,000 and 60,000 BTU's, or between one and five tons.

In multi-unit roof-mounted installations, American Standard builds an environmentally sound, high efficiency condenser.  These units are secured on aluminum supports at 18" above the roof-line.  This allows for roofing repairs and is a South Florida code requirement in new and re-roof applications.  Here are some examples of recent newly installed roof-mounted condensers:
